Tessa Verney Wheeler

May 18, 2012

HARN member Lydia Carr’s new book Tessa Verney Wheeler has now been
released in the UK by the Oxford University Press and available from their US publishing wing in early August. In this book, Carr explores the role of women in early British archaeology through the life and career of Tessa Wheeler. Tessa Wheeler’s untimely death left her archaeological career overshadowed by her distinguished husband, Sir Mortimer Wheeler. However, in this biography, her life is recovered through an examination of her written work, archives, sites, and photographs, as well as through the memories of those who knew her. The work is intended for students, scholars, and the general reader interested in historical biographies, the history of archaeology, and archaeological theory.
